Vitamin D supplement?

Postby Krista » Tue Feb 02, 2010 9:04 am

I know several of the Paleo-blogs (such as PaNu http://www.paleonu.com/panu-weblog/2009 ... min-d.html) advocate using a vitamin D supplement if your sun exposure isn't high enough, but there seems to be a lot of variation in how much?

Has anyone noticed this effecting their mood/health at all?

There is a ton of research coming in about the benefits great Vitamin D supplementation. I started using Vitamin D supplements about a month ago and I think it does make a difference.

Three out of four Americans are deficient in Vitamin D, mostly because we are sooo afraid to get any sun exposure. Vitamin D deficiency has been known to create bone density issues, it is also being linked to a lot of other conditions from the flu to cancer.

We are moving farther and farther away from our natural habits, things like a paleo style diet, not exercising properly, not enough sun exposure, etc. All of these things are causing exponential growth in disease.

Here is a really good article about it....http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/sunshine-v ... consensus/

I take 7000iu a day. You would probably be good with around 5000iu a day. This is much higher than the previously recommended amounts. Make sure you get Vitamin D-3 and pay attention to the type of oil that is used in the pill. Trader Joe's brand has olive oil as its oil. Others use Soy or other "bad" oils.

Google Vitamin D deficiency, you will find all kinds of good reading material.

Awesome--so I'm a contractor at CDC, and they have all these seminars and such--one that just came up was a randomized control study of Vitamin D supplements during pregnancy:

"An internationally-recognized expert in vitamin D research, Dr. Hollis will provide an overview of vitamin D physiology and health issues and will share results from two randomized control trials of vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy. In both trials, vitamin D sufficiency was strongly associated with decreased risks for preterm birth, for infection during pregnancy and for other comorbidities, with the greatest effect obtained with a 4000 IU vitamin D/day regimen. No adverse events were associated with vitamin D supplementation."

Awesome!!! Exactly what I've been taking for two weeks now.

Taking too many Vitamin D through supplements like cod liver oil can cause constipation, nausea, poor appetite, vomiting, weakness, and weight loss. This what happened to my brother. He just lost a lot weight after taking so much Vitamin D.
